25. Diocese of Umzimvubu

The Diocese of Umzimvubu is located in the northern area of the former homeland of the Transkei, and so shares many of the characteristics of the neighbouring Diocese of Mthatha. Historically underdeveloped and largely rural, this area has some of the highest poverty levels in the country. Traditionally, economically viable people migrate from this area towards the bigger cities to find work. When they become ill with AIDS, they come back to this area to be nursed and to die. It is in this area particularly that one finds grandmothers looking after multiple grandchildren who have been orphaned by AIDS. Over 20% of the adult population have had no schooling. About 84% of the population communicates in isiXhosa #and 16% in seSotho. HIV prevalence rates in this area are well above the national average.
