16. Diocese of Namibia

The Diocese of Namibia falls within the boundaries of the Republic of Namibia. Namibia is a country of vast open spaces and sparsely populated villages – with 1.83 million people occupying an area of 823 680km². 70% of the population lives in the Northern, rural areas. 53% of the population is less than 20 years old. Unemployment figures stand at 34%, and HIV prevalence is an estimated 23%. Higher rates of HIV prevalence are found in the northern, rural regions, where 22 of the diocese’s 31 parishes are situated.

Diocesan HIV & AIDS Co-Coordinator: Jackie Park
[needs updating] Jackie has been the Personal Assistant to Bishop Shihala Nehemiah Hamupembe of Namibia since April 2003. She was asked to take up the post of Secretary to the HIV/AIDS Committee and become Co-Coordinator of HIV & AIDS activities in June 2003 – her main responsibilities officially falling in the Central and Southern regions of Namibia.

Jackie hails from the Diocese of Manchester in the UK, where she worked for 23 years – as Diocesan Secretary for the last 9. The Diocese of Manchester has a formal link with the Diocese of Namibia, so when Namibia asked for a trainer in Christian Stewardship, Jackie took up the challenge. She ran workshops across the whole country in June & July of 2002. Having volunteered to come back, she returned in April 2003 as the Bishop’s PA and continue with training in Stewardship. Within 3 weeks of her return to Namibia, she was drawn into the HIV & AIDS programme.

Jackie is on the parish roll of St George’s Cathedral in Windhoek, but also attends St Michaels and Grace Church when she is not out traveling the Diocese.

Jackie’s husband, Allan, died in 1995. They had four children: Andrew, Katherine, Stephen (deceased) and Laura.
Jackie loves walking, particularly in the wilderness around mountains and lakes. She also enjoys reading, listening to music (anything except opera) and gardening.
