The Diocese of Mthatha is located in the Southern area of the former homeland of the Transkei. Historically underdeveloped and largely rural, poverty levels in this area are some of the highest in the country. Traditionally, economically viable people migrate from this area towards the bigger cities to find work. When they contract HIV/AIDS, they come back to this area to be nursed and to die. It is in this area particularly that one would find grandmothers looking after multiple grandchildren who have been orphaned by HIV/AIDS. Over 21% of the adult population have received no schooling. 84% of the population communicates in isiXhosa. HIV prevalence rates in this area are well above the national average.

Diocesan HIV & AIDS Coordinator: Revd Nomaza Roloti
Nomaza was appointed as the Diocesan HIV & AIDS Coordinator for Mthatha in May 2003 after the launch of Isiseko Sokomeleza. She was identified for this role through her involvement with the Diocesan Help Desk Committee and currently works in a part time capacity.
Nomaza gained experience in the field of HIV & AIDS through her position as Deputy Director for Youth Affairs in the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture. She is also a national and international trainer for the Girl Guide Association and serves on the committee for the Africa region.
Nomaza was ordained as a Deacon in June 2004 and serves at St Beads, Umtata. She is also a member of “Joining Hands Against Hunger” – an initiative of the Council of Churches in the Eastern Cape.
Nomaza has a great passion for women’s issues and for helping the weak. She has been a Girl Guide since the age of 15 and is still very actively involved. She loves to care for any person in need and is most comfortable when training, talking or teaching.
