The Diocese of Matlosane occupies the main proportion of the National Province of the North West. Home to just under 3.4 million people, it is largely rural with vast areas of bushveld stretching in all directions. The human resource development levels are low in this area – 23% of the adult population has received no schooling. Mining plays a dominant role in the economy of the area, employing a quarter of the active labour force.

Diocesan HIV & AIDS Coordinator: Canon Thomas Mafora
Father Thomas has been involved with HIV & AIDS work in the Diocese of Matlosane since 2000. With the help of Mrs Maggie Nkwe (wife of the Bishop of Matlosane), he has helped to set up projects addressing the effects of HIV & AIDS all over Matlosane Diocese.
Father Thomas began working for the church in 1968 as a “Caretaker catechist”. He was ordained in 1985 and is the Rector of St Anne’s Parish in Stilfontein, where he also runs a poverty alleviation project.
Father Thomas is married to Emma and is the proud father of five children: Tshepo (33) Christopher (32), Sarah (29), Joy (22) and Emmanuel (16). Father Thomas is the manager of a preschool in Khuma Township where Emma is the principal.
Father Thomas used to play in a band and is still passionate about music, especially guitar and voice. He also loves community work – especially counselling people who tend to confide in him as a priest.
