The diocese of The Highveld covers the East Rand region of Gauteng Province (a densely populated urban area) and the Eastern Highveld region of Mpumalanga province (a rural area) – spanning a distance of about 400km from west to east. Within the geographical boundaries of the diocese live an estimated 3 million people. HIV/AIDS, unemployment – in some of the rural communities of the diocese, more than 80% of the people are unemployed – poverty, education & health care are major issues. It is estimated that in some of the rural areas, the percentage of those living with HIV/AIDS is over 60%.
