The area covered by the Diocese of the Free State is home to 2.6 million South Africans. While the capital city, Bloemfontein, is a bustling urban area, the largest proportion of the diocese is rural, with long stretches of sparsely populated farmlands. The mining industry is the biggest employer in the Free State, with the accompanying complications of migrant labour and displaced families. The most widely spoken language is Sesotho (62%), followed by Afrikaans (14.5%) and isiXhosa (9.4%) There is an HIV prevalence rate of 28.8% in the Diocese of the Free State.

Mosamaria AIDS Ministry is an organization of the Anglican Diocese of the Free State which seeks to:
- support People Living with HIV/AIDS through the establishment of Support Groups throughout the Diocese, offering various services and encouraging Positive Living
- combat the spread of HIV through education, information and communication programmes as well as the Siyafundisa Peer Education Programme
- offer professional Voluntary Confidential Counselling and Testing for HIV through the New Start franchise at non-medical sites
- advocate for better services and rights for those living with HIV/AIDS
- support Orphans and Vulnerable Children who are suffering from the affects of HIV/AIDS, by creating a "Safe Place" for them to meet regularly where the love of God can be demonstrated to them in their bleak little worlds
Mosamaria supports all people infected and affected by HIV/AIDS, regardless of race, creed or colour, by demonstrating God's love in a practical way.
