Diocese of St Mark

The Diocese of St Mark the Evangelist (St Marks) comprises most of the National Province of Limpopo. The province of Limpopo was historically a patch-work quilt of Apartheid “homelands”, with 4 distinct “population groupings”. It has taken a great deal of hard work to integrate them all into one non-racial province. Great divides still exist between many of its 5 million people.

89% of the population lives in rural areas, with 46% of the people unemployed. Only 27% of the population subscribes to the Christian faith, limiting the church’s direct impact significantly. 53% of the population communicates in Northern Sotho, followed by Xitsonga (23%), Tshivenda (16%), Afrikaans (2%) and English (0.4%).
