Diocese of Natal

The Diocese of Natal covers half of the national province of Kwa-Zulu Natal. The province has the largest population in South Africa – it is home to 8.4 million people, 80% of whom communicate in Zulu. It consists of highly urbanised areas which contrast significantly with large rural areas. Illiteracy is a widespread problem – 23% of all adults have received no form of schooling. Over 50% of the population are unemployed, and there is a vast gap between the urban and rural per capita income.
