Diocese of Kimberley and Kuruman
The Diocese of Kimberley and Kuruman covers the largest proportion of South Africa’s national province of the Northern Cape. Historically, levels of development assistance and investment in this area have been extremely low, mainly owing to its vastness. The Northern Cape covers 30% of South Africa’s land mass (about 1 and a half times the size of the UK), yet is home to only 2% of the total population. 90% of the people in this diocese live in rural areas with many small towns in remote places. As a result, the diocese is economically poor, with extremely high levels of unemployment and high numbers of HIV positive people. 70% of this population is Afrikaans speaking, followed by Setswana (20%) and isiXhosa (6.3%).
